I've Had Enough Of Politics Tonight

Perhaps I've stayed up too late tonight, listening to the election results.

Perhaps my ever-increasing span of years has made me far more cynical.

But.

I do really, really wonder what is going on with democracy within the UK right now.

Firstly, what is democracy anyway?

Oh yeah, its queuing up for hours to be told you cannot vote.

WTF?

Sure, if you turn up too late you lose your right to vote but thousands of people got to the polling stations hours before they were due to close and still couldn't exercise their right to choose a candidate.

Perhaps thats just another symptom of Britain these days - we can't organise anything with any level of competence these days.

Secondly, what is democracy anyway?

In the United Kingdom the government is formed by the party with the most seats.

At the time of writing that looks like it will be the Conservatives but that doesn't mean anything - the political commentary I am listening to suggests that Gordon Brown could stay on as Prime Minister and form a coalition government even if his Labour party get utterly trounced in the polls.

Doesn't sound right to me.

Thirdly, what is democracy anyway?

Democracy is electing candidates who will represent the people and respect their wishes.

Can someone please tell the politicians about that point please.

In all my years I've never known an MP who seems to really care about what the British people want, they just plough on with their party's agendas regardless.

Lastly, what is democracy anyway?

I haven't voted in a long, long time - I live in an area where one particular party gets a massive majority so my one vote would make no difference.

Today, however, I decided to have my voice heard, however inconsequential it may be.

When I went to the polling station I was gobsmacked to find my polling card was numbered and that number was recorded next to my name - isn't voting in a General Election meant to be completely anonymous??

Oh well, I guess no-one will complain - after all, we've become accustomed to the fact that British politicians want to completely erode our freedoms and privacy.

I guess voting in a democracy really is just a comforting scam after all.
